Meet Julia
Wellness Assistant
About
After obtaining my BA in English at Wesleyan University and MS in Leisure Studies at Penn State, I worked in small scale clinical trials at MUSC where I saw both breakthroughs in medicine as well as the frustrations of waste and beaurcracy that hamper progress
in the medical field. I took a break from professional work to raise 3 children and re-entered the workforce as office admin at a mental health clinic. After experiencing my own healing at Rising Tide, I have the amazing opportunity to now work where I can
be part of the healing journey for our practice members.
Why Functional Medicine?
If someone was tasked with designing a system that effectivtly addressed the health and healing of 90% of medical issues for adults, Functional Medicine is the model that would emerge as the solution. Functional medicine provides the space for patients to be heard and seen as a WHOLE person, not just the sum of parts. It is a place that believes that healing is not just relief from symptoms, but addressing the root cause of disease and leveraging not just medicine but all the important tools and aspects of wellness – spiritual, social and lifestyle – that can bring incredible transformation.
How do you take care of yourself?
take care of myself by incorporating healthy routines into my daily life. I plan ahead to prioritize exercise and nutrition. I balance building community and nurturing relationships with times of solitude to refresh and refocus. I find spirituality and meaningful connection to God through worship at my local church and time for reflection and prayer. I strive to make life meaningful while keeping things uncomplicated.
What areas in your life do you see opportunities for growth?
An area of opportunity for me is learning to step out of my comfort zone more often. I’ve been pushing myself to try new things, take on challenges that feel a little uncomfortable, and remind myself that the long-term benefits are worth the stretch. I’m practicing doing one uncomfortable thing every day, bringing more creativity into my relationships, and learning a new skill to keep growing in ways that feel authentic and energizing.
Your family:
I am lucky to be married to my best friend, Darryl. I fell in love with him one day when he dragged me into hurricane swell to bogeyboard. Domesticated life has tampered our recklessness, but we now have three amazing daughters and being parents of young adults has its own adventures! Being a part of their growth and watching them navigate life gives me boundless pride and joy. I am also thankful to have the love and support of my extended family, who would move the moon and stars to love and support each other.
Favorite book:
I love a good memoir or story of redemption. I just finished “Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption and Hollywood” by Danny Trejo.
Top played song on your Spotify account:
I have pretty eclectic tastes from Tchaikovsky to Creedance Clearwater to Need to Breathe.
Favorite quote:
Be the change you wish to see in the world. – Mahatma Ghandi
You don’t have to take all the steps, just the next one. – unknown
