Cold and flu season can hit fast, leaving you feeling congested, fatigued, and out of commission. The good news? With the right support, you can give your body the tools it needs to defend itself and recover faster. In this guide, we’ll walk you through our Cold & Flu Immune Support Protocol, and we’ll include links to recommended versions of each supplement. Quality matters: supplements can be unregulated, especially at random grocery stores or big-box retailers, so it’s important to choose products that are third-party tested to ensure purity, potency, and safety.
1. Vitamin D3 + K2 – 10,000 IU Daily
Vitamin D is critical for immune system regulation, and pairing it with K2 ensures calcium is directed where it belongs, not in your arteries.
- Form: Capsules or liquid
- Benefit: Supports immune defense, respiratory health, and overall wellness
- Tip: Dosing can be adjusted based on serum vitamin D levels to optimize immune support
2. Vitamin C – 1,000 mg, 3x Daily
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and immune booster.
- Form: Liquid or capsules
- Benefit: Helps reduce the duration and severity of colds, supports white blood cell function, and fights oxidative stress
- Tip: Spread dosing throughout the day for maximum absorption
3. Zinc – 50 mg Daily
Zinc is essential for immune cell development and function.
- Form: Tablet, taken with food to avoid nausea
- Benefit: Supports antiviral defense and may shorten the duration of cold symptoms
4. Melatonin – 5–10 mg Nightly
Melatonin isn’t just for sleep; it has antiviral and antioxidant properties as well.
- Form: 1/2 tablet to 1 full tablet at night
- Benefit: Supports restorative sleep and immune function, and provides additional antiviral protection
- Why it’s healthier than Nyquil: Many Nyquil formulations contain dextromethorphan, which long-term studies suggest may negatively affect cognitive health. Melatonin provides restorative sleep without these unwanted chemicals.
5. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) – 900 mg, 1–2x Daily
NAC is a precursor to glutathione, one of your body’s most important antioxidants.
- Benefit: Supports liver detox, immune function, and helps control excess mucus or congestion in the lungs and sinuses
6. Black Cumin Seed Oil + Curcumin – 500 mg Softgel, Twice Daily
This combination delivers anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive benefits.
- Benefit: Supports overall immune system function and may reduce inflammation when sick. Nigella sativa, or black seed as it is also called, has been traditionally used for respiratory issues, including coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. Its seeds and oil contain compounds like thymoquinone, which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These properties may help soothe the airways, reduce inflammation, and support immune function, which can indirectly help with coughs.
7. AndroGraphis Tablets – 1–2x Daily
Formulated with holy basil and echinacea, Andrographis is antiviral and supports immune defense.
- Use: 1 tablet twice daily, or up to 4x daily if needed
- Benefit: Helps your immune system respond to viral exposure and supports overall wellness. Andrographis is an herb traditionally used to help reduce the severity and duration of cold and flu symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive properties.
8. Oscillococcinum (Homeopathic) – 2+ Years Old
Clinical studies suggest this homeopathic remedy can reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms, including body aches, fever, chills, and fatigue.
- Use: Dissolve 1 tube in the mouth every 6 hours, up to 3x/day
- Benefit: Safe for adults and children 2 years and up, provides extra flu-specific support
9. Designs for Health Immune Support Packets
These packets are a convenient all-in-one formula that combines many immune-supportive nutrients from the list above.
- Use: Great for travel, exposure to sick individuals, or whenever someone in your household is feeling run down
- Tip: Supplement with extra vitamin C, vitamin D, and melatonin as needed for added immune support
